How do I leave a gift in my will?

We recommend you use a qualified solicitor to amend or write your will. You can find a solicitor near you on the Law Society website: https://solicitors.lawsociety.org.uk/

If you want to write your will yourself, the Government’s website sets out how to do it: https://www.gov.uk/donating-to-charity/leaving-gifts-to-charity-in-your-will

What is Kernow Positive Support’s address and charity number?

The Piran Room, The Hub, RCHT Treliske, Penventinnie Lane, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 3LJ

Registered Charity No. 1186054

Below are some explanations of different types of gifts you can leave Kernow Positive Support, and wording you might find helpful to use.

You can either leave a specific amount of money, which is known as a pecuniary gift, or a share of what’s left over after all your wishes have been carried out, which is a residuary gift. You may leave either the total of the remainder or a percentage of it.

If you’d like to leave a pecuniary gift, you might find this wording helpful: ‘I bequeath to Kernow Positive Support of The Piran Room, The Hub, RCHT Treliske, Penventinnie Lane, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 3LJ, Registered Charity No. 1186054, the sum of £…’

If you’d like to leave a residuary gift: ‘My Executors (these will be defined) shall divide the residue of my estate into equal shares and shall hold such shares as follows: a) as to (specify number) such shares for Kernow Positive Support of The Piran Room, The Hub, RCHT Treliske, Penventinnie Lane, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 3LJ, Registered Charity No. 1186054, absolutely; b) as to (specify number) such shares for (legatee) of (address) absolutely.’

How can I make sure my gift maintains its value over time?

The value of a specific sum of money, a pecuniary gift, will decrease over time, as the cost of living increases.

You can leave a residuary gift (a share of what’s left over after your debts have been paid and your wishes carried out) which will hold its value better than a cash sum. Or you can leave a fixed cash sum which can be linked to the index of retail prices, allowing your gift to keep its value in line with inflation.

If you’d like to leave an index-linked cash gift, the suggested wording is:

“I give to Kernow Positive Support of The Piran Room, The Hub, RCHT Treliske, Penventinnie Lane, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 3LJ, Registered Charity No. 1186054, the sum of £ (INSERT AMOUNT) or such larger sum as my executors calculate to have the same value at my death as the figure specified at the date of this (INSERT either ‘Will’ or ‘Codicil’)”
